Eyeball Pattern

Updated: Aug 19

You will need:

  • 4mm (G) crochet hook

  • Worsted weight yarn (4) in black, white, and your colour choice for the iris (I love Bernat Handicrafter 100% cotton)

  • Polyfil fibre stuffing

  • Scissors

  • Embroidery thread with yarn needle OR 2.5mm (or smaller) crochet hook - these are optional, only if you want to add veins!

Normally when crocheting a ball, it would typically be done in rounds, but for this pattern we will be crocheting it in ROWS instead of rounds. The reason being we want to have a distinct start and end to each round because we have different colours of yarn, and we want those colours to be separate from each other.

Let's get crocheting!

STARTING WITH BLACK

CHAIN 2

Row 1: In the second chain from hook, 6sc, slip stitch to the first sc to join (6sc)

Row 2: 2sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to join (12sc)

CHANGE TO IRIS COLOUR

Row 3: Chain 1, *2sc in the first stitch, 1sc in the next*, repeat around, slip stitch to join to the first sc (18sc)

Row 4 : Chain 1, *2sc in the first stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches*, repeat around, slip stitch to join to the first sc (24sc)

CHANGE TO WHITE

Row 5: Chain 1, *2sc in the first stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches*, repeat around, slip stitch to join to the first sc (30sc)

Row 6: Chain 1, *2sc in the first stitch, 1sc in the next 4 stitches*, repeat around, slip stitch to join to the first sc (36sc)

Row 7: Chain 1, *2sc in the first stitch, 1sc in the next 5 stitches*, repeat around, slip stitch to join to the first sc (42sc)

Rows 8 - 14: Chain 1, 1sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to join to the first sc

Here is where you can add the veins to your eye (if you want). Take a piece of embroidery thread, and using either a yarn needle, or your smaller crochet hook ( I used a 2.5mm), pull the thread through your eye (from the outside in). Do this in a few different places, and tie the thread together on the inside of your eye.

Row 14: sc2tog, 1sc in the next 5 stitches, repeat around, slip stitch to join to first sc (36sc)

Row 15: sc2tog, 1sc in the next 4 stitches, repeat around, slip stitch to join to first sc (30sc)

Row 16: sc2tog, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, repeat around, slip stitch to join to first sc (24sc)

Row 17: sc2tog, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat around, slip stitch to join to first sc (18sc)

Row 18: sc2tog, 1sc in the next stitch, repeat around, slip stitch to join to first sc (12sc)

Row 19: sc2tog 6 times, fasten off, weave in ends.

And you're done! I hope you find many uses for your eyes! Perhaps you can make them with glow-in-the-dark yarn and decorate your house for Halloween? It's only months away ;)
