You will need:

  • Medium/Worsted Weight (4) Yarn in Yellow, Black and White

    • Crochet Hook(s): 4mm. (Optional: 3.25mm hook + 2mm hook) (See below for further explanation)

    • Polyfill Stuffing

    • Safety Eyes (Optional)

    • Key Chain (Optional)

I made these bees using a 4mm hook and a 3.25mm hook. The yarn weight remained the same.

The 3.25mm hook yields a slightly smaller bee.

The 2mm hook is used for the wings only. HOWEVER - if you don’t have a 2mm hook, or crocheting with a hook that small is too difficult, you can use a 3.25, or 4mm hook.

I like to use a smaller hook as I find smaller wings look a lot cuter :)

Just work with whatever makes you comfortable!

Let’s get crocheting!

To start:

With yellow + the hook of your choice:

Chain 2.

Row 1: 6 sc in the second chain from hook. Slip stitch to the first sc to join (6sc)

Row 2: Chain 1 (does not count as sc), 2sc in same stitch and each stitch around, slip stitch to the first sc in the row. (12sc)

Row 3: Chain 1 (does not count as sc), 2 sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next. 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next.

Repeat ** around to the end, slip stitch to the first sc in the row, (18sc)

CHANGE TO BLACK

Row 4 + 5: Chain 1 (does not count as sc), 1sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (18sc).

(At the end of Row 5, CHANGE TO YELLOW)

This is when I like to attach the eyes! Make sure you’re happy with their position before securing them in place with the washer on the other side. I find having them set further apart looks best, but play around with them until you find a look you like!

Row 6 + 7: Chain 1 (does not count as sc), 1sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (18sc).

In Row 6 is where I would attach the keychain. (OPTIONAL)

After crocheting approximately halfway through the row (9 sc stitches), I remove the hook, pull the loop through the ring of the keychain, then re-insert the hook and continue to crochet as usual.

(At the end of Row 7, CHANGE TO BLACK)

Row 8: Chain 1 (does not count as sc), 1sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to the first sc to join. (18sc)

Row 9: Chain 1 (does not count as sc), 1sc2tog, 1sc in the next stitch. 1sc2tog, 1sc in the next stitch. Repeat ** until the end, slip stitch to the first sc to join. (12sc)

At the end of Row 9, CHANGE TO YELLOW (Now would also be a good time to stuff the bee!)

Row 10: Chain 1, sc2tog, repeat around, slip stitch to the first sc to join. You should have 6sc.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail to weave in and close up the bee butt ;)

Wings:

With your hook of choice and the white yarn, Chain 2 (or make a magic ring).

10 dc in the second chain from hook, slip stitch to the first sc.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew to the bee. Using your crochet hook, (or a yarn needle if you prefer, but I use a hook), sew the wings to the body of the bee.

Trim the yarn and weave in the ends.

Aaaaand you're done! :)
